Jargon
We like to keep things simple and straight forward. On this page we will explain what things mean and what the abreviations stand for. If you know of others not on this page then please let us know and we will add it.
- Cookie – a small simple file that is sent along with pages of this website and stored by your browser on the hard drive of your computer or another device.
- Domain – the website address – this is unique to every website
- .gov – this is the extention on the website address for all government organisations including parish councils.
- Hosting – Your website, all your files and emails will be kept (hosted) on a server (a kind of super computer). When someone enters your website address, they will be taken to the servier where your website is hosted.
- Mailbox – this is where your emails will be stored
- Search Engine – these are websites that help you find something specific on the internet. Type in a word or phrase and they will list as many sites, pictures, items related to that request. Google and Microsoft Bing are two of the biggest search engines.
- SEO – Site Engine Optimisation – this is a program that assesses your website and suggests ways or amends your site so that search engines like Google will find it more easily and put it closer to the top of relevant searches. This refers to unpaid searches rather than paid searches.
- SSL – Secure Socket Layer – means website is encrypted to make it harder to hack. The https at the begining of the website address tells you it is secure.
- WWW – world wide web – some websites have this at the start of they address.
